Safety glasses are an important part of protection both on the job and around the home. If more people routinely wore these glasses there would be significantly less trips to the emergency room and many more people without damage to their eyes. Glasses that provide protection to the eyes and surrounding tissue need to be comfortable, lightweight and also provide a clear field of vision. In addition there are now tinted glasses that are ideal for indoor and outdoor wear and help prevent eye strain in very bright lighting conditions.

Safety glasses are different in design than standard eyeglasses for a very specific reason. They are constructed to prevent material from entering into the eye area from the sides as well as from the top and bottom. Standard eye glasses do provide protection from material, objects or debris that is coming toward the eye from the front, but they don’t protect the other areas of the eye. The glasses can be placed lens down without causing damage, making these glasses much more practical than a traditional glass type of lens.

The newer materials used in lenses also provide options for both anti-fog glasses as well as chemical resistance. Chemical resistant glasses are typically required for laboratory work or working with a variety of solvents, liquids and materials in a many types of industries. It is important to always check the safety requirements and specifications when working with hazardous chemicals and wear only the appropriate safety eyewear. Anti-fog lenses are also an important consideration for a variety of working conditions. These glasses quickly clear with any additional heat, steam or humidity in the air.

Tinted lens options in safety glasses are perfect for both indoor and outdoor work. Like clear lenses they come in a variety of styles from wrap around to more aviator styles, of course with additional protection to the eyes from the temple area. For both indoor and outdoor use lanyards are a great idea to keep glasses in a safe place when not in use. Tinted lenses are available in different tint colors from lighter to darker tints. Common lens colors include light blue, smoke, mirror blue, amber, silver and gray. There is also an espresso color, which can be a dark tan to dark brown color that provides UV protection as well as meets various OSHA and ANSI standards.

Choosing the correct safety glasses is important in caring for your eyes regardless of the job you are working on. With a wide variety of styles, lens and frame colors as well as types of glasses it is definitely handy to have a few different pairs on hand.
